How does the treatment work?

After the anamnesis – the patient talk where you get to describe your complaints and what has happened – and the thorough examination a diagnosis and plan of treatment is set. When setting the diagnosis and treatment plan, biomechanical, psychological and social factors which can affect the complaints are taken into consideration. Thenceforth the treatment is executed accordingly to the diagnosis. Manipulation and mobilization techniques is often combined with soft tissues techniques such as massage, connective tissue techniques and stretching. When needed electroconvulsive therapy and acupuncture can be used. Initially the treatment is targeted to reduce the pain, and later to restore the function in the neuromusculoskeletal system. Thereafter a momentous part is to analyze and adjust underlying causation, which for example could be muscular imbalance, lack of activity or defects in the working environment. The patient often receives an individual and adapt training program, as well as ergonomic advice with purpose to rehabilitate and prevent.

In some cases an analysis of the workplace is also done. A very important part of the treatment is to involve the patient in the recovery and to motivate to changes that gives long term results.

How much does the treatment cost?

A naprapathic treatment usually costs about 600 and 650 swedish krona.

How long is a naprapathic treatment?

A treatment is usually 30-45 minutes. During the first appointment the naprapath normally reserves more time in order to make a thorough anamnesis (a patient dialogue) and examination.

Can naprapathy be financed by the county council?

Today there are care agreements or naprapathy included in care agreements in 13 out of 21 county councils. In for example the region of Skåne and in Stockholm’s county council naprapathy is included in the care agreement. The Swedish Naprapathic Association consider it to be an important task to work to create conditions for naprapathy financed by the county councils in all of them, and also to create more naprapathy within the county councils.

How many treatments are required?

Within the scope of securing the quality of the work, The Swedish Naprapathic Association regularly performs a data collection. The ongoing evaluation shows that it normally takes 3 to 4 treatments per discomfort. It is however important to point out that the quantity of treatments vary a lot. This due the fact that it is affected by the type of discomfort, but also by the patient’s current status.

How long is the naprapathic education?

The education cover fours years of full time studies, equivalent to 240 ECTS-points. Approximately half of the education is dedicated to characteristic subject naprapathy, which includes theoretical as well as practical parts. The other half is dedicated to human biology, medical, and social- and behavioral science. In order to receive authorization and the right the use the protected work title naprapathy, one year of experience in form of a supervised full-time job, nine months with a legitimized naprapath and three years within swedish health care is required.

How many naprapaths are there in Sweden?

The Swedish Naprapathic Association has nearly 1200 members today.
